How to Enjoy Your Biracial Romance

How to Enjoy Your Biracial Romance

Interracial romance is not new. In fact, the first registered mulatto child, the first-generation offspring of a white and black person, was born during the 1600s. However, such union was later banned through anti-miscegenation; and this brought a lot of stigma in society, which, unfortunately, carried on for so many years.

As laws started to ease and people developed better understanding, interracial or biracial romance became more popular, and the unions were no longer limited to black and white races. By the year 1990, there were over 1 million interracial marriages in the country. At least 75 percent of the Native Americans married someone who came from another ethnicity, and more than 50 percent of the youth had dated someone who belonged to another race.

You can definitely enjoy a biracial romance without feeling a lot of pressure from each other's differences. Here are ways on how you can do it:

1. Accept each other's cultures. Because you belong to two different races, you are raised differently. Each of you has his or her own set of traditions, customs, and rules being followed. You don't have to follow them, but you need to accept and respect them. Allow your partner to worship his or her religion, as well as celebrate holidays his or her family hold dear.

2. Don't push your belief to your partner. In relation to no. 1, it's very important you don't try to change your partner and make him or her own, unless it is his or her decision to do so.

3. Take things slow. It's essential for every couple to not rush into deep commitment or relationship. Instead, you should take time to get to know each other, especially when you both are dealing varying cultures. Keep in mind that his or her ethnicity is part of who he or she is. If you wish to love him or her, you should embrace everything that defines your partner.

4. Just enjoy the new culture. One of the best ways to nurture a biracial romance is to develop a sense of appreciation to your partner's culture. Again, you don't have to accept or believe them, but you can definitely learn from them. Use them as your educational tools. Discovering a different culture is like traveling to another part of the world and staying there for a very long time.

5. Always talk about things. It's normal for couples to argue and have their differences, but these differences may be more emphasized when you don't belong to the same ethnicity. That's why as much as possible you should spend time to talk about each other's issues and resolve them before they get out of hand.

6. Remember that love is still the key. Sometimes you'll feel out of place or not in sync with your partner's tradition and belief, and you think the relationship isn't going to work out. Don't forget, however, that though his or her ethnic background is essential, it doesn't make up his or her entire persona.

When you feel depressed or overwhelmed by the relationship, just remember these subliminal messages:

I am worthy to be loved.

Love conquers everything, including ethnic differences.

I am loved because of who I really am, not just because of my ethnicity.
